You already know the best weight loss long term is regular exercise and a well-balanced diet, but during the holidays life and family can take us off course. Here are a few tips to keep you staying trim over the holidays:
- Water consumption Drinking enough water is very important, especially during the dry winter months when we are more dehydrated than usual and crave warm drinks like hot chocolate or spiced wine. Drink at least 10 glasses of water a day. The more water you drink, the less water you retain. It may sound backwards, but drinking water helps to flush out sodium and excess waste. Feel free to add a little zest to you water with frozen diced cucumber and lemon as ice cubes. Water doesn’t have to be boring.
- Relax Don’t let the pressure of the holidays take you into emotion overload. Stress can cause sickness and emotion-driven binge eating. Stress hormones affect your respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Try doing 20 minutes of meditation everyday or get up and move for 20 minutes whether it’s a walk around the block or a giant lap around the mall. Get your holiday shopping finished while you’re there!
- Sleep Sleeping is the best way for the body to recover and maintain vital functions. With less than five hours of sleep a night, recent studies have shown that less sleep is linked to weight gain. In men, they craved more high-calorie foods. In women, they gained a significant amount of weight (11 lbs.). Shoot for that magic number eight to keep your appetite in check and your body properly rested for all the fun you’re going to have this holiday season.
With these few tips, you should have no problem stay trim over the holidays. Have a great holiday and be well!
